Souten Kitchen Knife Set: Traditionally forged by Artisans

Crafting in Japan, these beautifully made and extremely sharp petty, bunka, and nakiri knives are the perfect addition to any kitchen! These knives are forged individually by hand by a skilled artisan located in Nagasaki, who carries on the ancient Japanese tradition of blacksmithing. By combining Shirogami No.2, a steel that is high in carbon, and traditional forging techniques, we are able to achieve a razor-sharp edge and ease of use.

Forging Unlocks the True Sharpness of Shirogami #2 Steel

IMG_3846.jpeg

In order to bring out the true potential of Shirogami No. 2 steel, the blade is created not by using mass-production manufacturing techniques, but instead using traditional forging techniques. Heating the steel and forging it creates a blade that has an internal structure that is denser and more resilient. This process enhances both the durability of the blade and the consistency of its edge.

A Traditional Urushi Lacquer Octagonal Handle

5.png

The handle of the knife is made of natural oak and is finished using the traditional Japanese lacquer urushi. The upper section of the handle has been finished by layering black urushi that has been mixed with iron powder, which creates a distinctive texture and character. Urushi lacquer has been used since ancient times as a material for Japanese handicrafts, and is beautifully lustrous, as well as improving durability. The handle of the knife is an octagonal shape, which is also used in other various high-end knives. Usable by left-handed and right-handed people, it has a stable grip. The upper section that has been finished with urushi lacquer has an uneven surface, which acts as a non-slip section as well.
