The Zen Knife is made by a carving knife manufacturer in Miki, using a high-speed steel (SKH51) that makes the sharpness last longer than regular steel. Its sharpness is said to last three times longer than a normal knife! In adding a very mild unprocessed iron to the high-speed steel, it makes the blade possible to be sharpened so you can enjoy the sharpness for a longer time. Making the Zen Knife is pretty time demanding since each hardened knife is manually sharpened by a craftsman one at a time, but in doing so it creates an unbelievably sharp edge that cannot be achieved through mass production.

A Decorative Art, the Kumihimo Cord
Did you know that the handle of a Japanese sword is decorated with a unique kumihimo cord? The Zen Knife also inherits the same esthetic sense and spirit as this Japanese sword with its own kumihimo wrapped around the handle. A kumihimo is a traditional handicraft introduced to Japan along with Buddhism in the middle of the 5th century, braiding various colored silk and cotton threads into a single cord. The kumihimo used is specially ordered from Showen Kumihimo in Kyoto.
